Kent Cubes are named after Prince George, the Duke of Kent who was Grand Master of United Grand Lodge of England between 1939 and 1942. Three of them are on display in the museum.
Kent Cubes are acrylic cubes containing a gold coloured medal. The medal has the Coat of Arms of the United Grand Lodge of England on one side, and the signature of the Grand Master on the rear. They are given by the Grand Master to each Provincial Grand Master on them taking office – as a memento.
Lucite (r) Acrylic was invented in 1931 and has been used for embedding materials since the 1940s.
The current Grand Master (Edward, Duke of Kent) has been in office from 1967 to the current date. The museum has 2 cubes from the current Grand Master’s era (signed “Edward” on the rear of the medal) – potentially belonging to the Provincial Grand Masters Stanley Lates and Thomas A Wood.
The oldest cube, belonging to Stivichall Lodge is signed “Scarborough” and was given to Sir Stanley J Harley, when he became Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire in 1965. Laurence Roger Lumley , the 11th Earl of Scarborough was the Grand Master of UGLE between 1951 and 1967
