This Framed piece of art is typical of masonic pieces made by French Prisoners of War held in Britain during the Napoleonic wars (1803-181).
Using large watch glasses, these pieces contain tiny fragments arranged into various masonic emblems. The example in our museum has been mounted in a small frame so that it can be hung on a wall.
The meaning of the arrangement symbols is often random, and has no significance
Purchasers of pieces made by the Prisoners admired the skill of the craftsmen and the intricacies of the designs. The sale of these items supported the prisoners with small amounts of money, and so masonic items were made, presumably to appeal to the generosity of the local masonic community.
This item is the property of the Warwickshire Provincial Museum, and is currently on display at Dalecote House
